Suitable for complete beginners new to mixing their own glazes or experienced potters looking to expand their knowledge, this course combines practical mixing and firing of glazes with a theoretical grounding in the following aspects of ceramic glaze chemistry:
Ceramic materials: What they are and why we use them
Testing process: Developing an effective system
Glazing tools and equipment
Health and safety whilst glazing
Simple starting points from low-fire (Cone 06) to high-fire (Cone 10)
Glaze rheology, flocculation and deflocculation
Thermal expansion
Glaze defects and their causes/solutions
Firing: Schedules, pyrometric cones, oxidation/reduction atmospheres
All materials and equipment are provided. Class capacity is limited to 6 participants to ensure that ample individual attention can be given. Participants will be encouraged to take notes during sessions and should ideally come equipped with a notepad and pen or digital note-taking device.
