Suitable for complete beginners new to mixing their own glazes or experienced potters looking to expand their knowledge, this workshop combines the practical side of mixing glazes and a theoretical grounding in the following aspects of ceramic glaze chemistry:

• Ceramic materials: What they are and why we use them

• Testing process: Developing an effective system

• Glazing tools and equipment

• Health and safety whilst glazing

• Simple starting points from low-fire (Cone 06) to high-fire (Cone 10)

• Glaze rheology, flocculation and deflocculation

• Thermal expansion

• Glaze defects and their causes/solutions

• Firing: Schedules, pyrometric cones, oxidation/reduction atmospheres

All materials and equipment are provided. Class capacity is limited to 6 participants to ensure that ample individual attention can be given. Participants will be encouraged to take notes and should ideally come equipped to do so.
